Virginia Water Couples Shoot

Here is Lisa and Richard from their couple’s shoot at Virginia Water Lake in October.

Virginia Water Lake lies on the southern edge of Windsor Great Park, in the borough of Runnymede in Surrey and it is right on their doorstep. So what better place to have their pre wedding shoot?

Virginia Water Couples Shoot

This was a lovely time of year. late spring and autumn are my favourite time for shoots becasue of the colour.

We did a circuit of the lake, visited the waterfall, stood in some fields and headed deep into the woods…

COuples engagement shoot in the Cotswolds

Two days in the Cotswolds
Ye Vonn & Nicholas

Cotswold Couple Shoot

Normally when I’m asked for a couples shoot they last 1-2 hours but with Ye Vonn and Nicholas their shoot was a 10 hours across two days sort of affair.

They are from and are getting married in Malaysia but beforedoing so they wanted to have some photos in the UK, namely in the cotswold area.

We started off the day before at Buckland Manor, Broadway where we made the most of the grounds and beautiful sunset. The next day we headed off to Cotswold Lavender where you can get permission to shoot amongst the gorgeous Lavender fields. We were lucky in that a week later it was going to be harvested.

We also stopped by some of the local landmarks at every opportunity and grabbed photos there as well before ending off in a village nearby to capture the spirit of the buildings.

This was a massive shoot compared to those I normally do, with make up and costume changes. There was so many photos at the end of it.

Here are a selection of my favourites from the day:

Beth & Ben

Sussex couples shoot

Say hello to Beth and Ben whose wedding I’m shooting in around a months time at Cripps Barn in the Cotswolds.

They both live in Brighton though so we had a couples shoot there, under the pier, along the beach and at an orchard up the road.

Sussex couples shoot

I enjoy the exclusivity I get with a couple during a shoot. At a wedding you have a lot of distractions but when it’s just the three of us you can really focus on the couple and they can focus on each other!

Here’s some more images from their shoot!

West Wittering Beach couples shoot

West Wittering Beach
Felicity & Alex
Meet Felicity and Alex. this gorgeous couple are getting married this August at Upwaltham Barns in Petworth.

But before then we planned a couples shoot where Alex proposed, which was across the dunes at West Wittering Beach. I love couple shoots, so much so I have one with my wife Laura each time we go away on holiday.

It’s something the brings you closer together, you get great photos at the end of it and you’re warmed up for your imminent wedding day.

We parked up, hit the dunes, the beach huts and the seafront. The tide was out at the time so

Engagement shoots in Basingstoke

In a garden I could only dream of owning, under the threat of rain and a strong east wind the photo gods shone down on Cecilia and Tom yesterday.

Since early morning it had been cloud, overcast and well, a bit poo until 5pm , then we were given this….

Someone was looking out for us because as I’m typing this blog it’s quite predictably throwing it down out there. My dog Harvey is fed up that he can’t go out and chase cats (who let’s face it have more sense than to be waiting for him) but the upside is it gives me a chance to write up some of my work on the blog.

That’s May though, and I wouldn’t want it any differently. It’s my favourite month of the year. Everything comes to life! After the sun comes the rain, after the rain comes the sun…and so on it goes.

Cecilia and Tom are blessed with a huge garden and everywhere was a canvas for great photos. I like to split up my couple shoots into two locations where possible. The intimacy of a tight frame is beautiful, but I like to venture outside where we can be swallowed up by the landscape too.

The no drama / drama thing makes for a good contrast in the images.

20 perfectly good reasons to have a couples shoot

Couples Shoot in BasingstokeGorgeous huh?

Above is one perfectly good reason to have a couples shoot (and below are the other 19). I used to call them pre-wedding, engagement, beloved or whatever shoots but in reality they all suggest being wedding orientated. Screw that. A bit like how valentines day shouldn’t be the only time you show affection to each other or how Christmas is the only time you see family.

Couples Shoot in BasingstokeA couples shoot is a wonderful way of getting closer together, to zone out, put your phones away and enjoy each others company.

With Kimberley and James above it was a sunny day, we strong-armed ourselves into a couple of fields for photos. Admittedly, the height of the rape-seed was deceiving from the road and I had my comedy moments pushing through it (imagine a dog jumping through long grass…that was me).

Couples Shoot in BasingstokeKimberley needed help getting into field two (there was some nettles) so James and I pretty much launched her over, she screamed, we laughed and the shoot continued.

Brighton Couples Shoot

A Brighton Engagement Shoot
Shoshana & Grant

Brighton Engagement Shoot
Hello winter, remember summer?

Planning a wedding is a busy time for anyone, and it can be easy to forget that, while everyone wants photos of their big day, a lovely set of engagement photos can convey a real sense of excitement at what lies ahead.

Shoshana and Grant live in London and asked to have their engagement shoot in Brighton. You can be quite spoilt in this city. Brighton is a spectacular location, offering some great backdrops, the sea acting as a canvas to he pier with its attractions and amusements.

Brighton Engagement ShootBut it wasn’t all seaside-based – we went and used the local graffiti as an intimidating wrap around backdrop and then we drove to a local apple orchard for some shots amongst the long grass on a gorgeously sunny day, making for some genuinely romantic images.

Pre wedding shoots are a great way to remember that you love each other while forgetting all the stree associated with the planning side of things.

The sea and sky provided restful blue backgrounds for some photos, offering a nice contrast to the fun and brightly coloured, busier images of things like the funfair ride and helter skelter.

You can see from the eye contact and smiles between them that this is a young couple very much in love, who can’t wait to tie the knot and spend the rest of their lives together. With her long red hair catching the light, broad smile and pretty summer dress, Shoshana looks every inch the radiant bride to be.

Brighton Engagement ShootI think I’ve managed to get a nice range of images for this shoot, including ones of them sitting, standing, literally jumping for joy on the pier, (thanks to the lady who runs the Trampoline ride) and generally looking relaxed and glad to be together!

Genuinely, the smiles and laughter of this shoot were very natural as they should always be.

Windmill couples shoot

The Jack and Jill Windmills in Clayton
Charlotte & Nick’s

Windmill Wedding
When I spoke with Charlotte and Nick about a location for their engagement they suggested the Jack and Jill Windmills in Clayton. Great I thought, nice location, great views of the Downs and an imposing backdrop.

But I didn’t expect to end up inside it!

This lovely couple are getting married next year in Pyecombe Church with their reception at the fabulous Pangdean Barn.

We started off by walking around the area taking shots as something caught our eye. Because of the time of year there were daisies and dandelions everywhere adding colour and contrast.

Windmill WeddingAfter a few warm up shots on the grass we were invited up into the Jack Windmill for a walk around.

The steps up are very steep and we had to be careful. Once inside you are greeted with all the gears, pulleys and general nik naks which populate the space.

There is three levels to the mill and we went to each one. In the top floor you really notice the pitch and sway that the Windmill has as the wind catches it. Very much like being on a boat!Windmill Wedding

Afterwards we headed for some shots across the Sussex Downs and the weather really couldn’t of been better and we ended the shoot after visiting the Church in Pyecombe.

Amberley Castle couples shoot

An Engagement Shoot at Amberley Castle
Kate & James

Amberley Castle WeddingHere’s Kate and James, these two live in Phoenix, Arizona and are getting married in the UK this year.

When they were last over we had a catch up and Engagement shoot in and around Amberley Castle near Arundel in West Sussex.

Amberley Castle WeddingIt was a bit windy but the sun was out and it was nice to have some dedicated time with them both.

I enjoy engagement shoots because it allows you to do practice runs and to see how things work in preparation for the main event. Not essential, but fun nonetheless.
Amberley Castle Wedding

When at a wedding everything runs at 100 miles an hour, but when there is just the three of us and no real restrictions on time things can be slowed down and considered more. You can walk, talk and get to know each other better.

Brighton couples shoot windy day

An Engagement Shoot to Blow you Away – Literally
Jane & James

Brighton Pier shoot

That’s how windy it was during Jane and James’s engagement shoot last Friday. Windy. Like. You. Wouldn’t. Believe.

But hey, we won’t allow that to interfere with things too much shall we?

All joking aside though, maybe the pier wasn’t the best place to be on a windy day. But, due to the unpredictable weather we’ve had delaying the shoot Jane and James might of been married by the time it took place. So we went for it anyway….and it paid off.

We started off on the pier itself and soon decided which side of the pier to shoot on because of the weather. We walked along the length of Brighton Pier stopping occasionally for photos. Some places were a good idea, others not. The light was unpredictable but it was always interesting.

Brighton Pier shootHalfway along the pier we stopped at the milk cans and the nice chap there allowed me to hop over to record James throwing a few balls at the target, then we went to the arcade for a bit, heading off to the beach after.
